Beaumaris is the most elegant base on Anglesey: a working town rather than a resort, with the castle, pier, restaurants and coastal path all within a five-minute walk of any bed in the centre. Snowdonia’s attractions are 30–45 minutes by car, Bangor and the mainline railway about 20 minutes, and the island’s beaches fan out north and west.
The Options
Hotels — two Georgian landmarks anchor the town: the 43-room Bulkeley Hotel (1832) by the Green, and the 15th-century Ye Olde Bull’s Head Inn with boutique rooms above its celebrated dining. The Liverpool Arms (1706) adds characterful inn rooms, and Bishopsgate House is the refined townhouse option. Out of town, Château Rhianfa is North Wales’s French-castle fantasy.
Guest houses & B&Bs — led by Victoria Cottage, inside Hansom’s Grade I listed Victoria Terrace itself. Self-catering — a strong local suit, from the manor-house-and-cottages cluster at Tros Yr Afon to beachside cottages at Lleiniog towards Penmon.
Booking Advice
The town is small and beds are finite: regatta fortnight (late July–early August), summer weekends and bank holidays book out well ahead — reserve months early for those. Off-season, Beaumaris is quietly lovely and rates soften considerably. Which Base Suits You
First visit, no car: stay central — everything is walkable and the bus stop is on Castle Street. Romantic weekend: Bishopsgate House or the Bull’s Head for character, Château Rhianfa for full theatre. Family week: self-catering wins — Tros Yr Afon for space, Lleiniog for the beach at the gate. Walkers: anywhere in town puts the coastal path at the door; through-walkers on the island circuit treat Beaumaris as the comfortable night.
