Morning: the Castle

Arrive early — parking fills by late morning in summer — and give the castle the first two hours while it’s quiet: moat circuit first for the photographs, then the wall passages and inner ward. Coffee afterwards on Castle Street, browsing the independents as you go; drop into St Mary’s Church for the misericords and Princess Joan’s coffin — ten minutes well spent.

Lunch & the Water

Lunch options run from bar meals at the 15th-century Ye Olde Bull’s Head to the Liverpool Arms’ Admiral’s Tavern — see the pubs guide. Then the afternoon centrepiece: a Puffin Island cruise from the pier (about an hour; seals near-guaranteed, puffins April–July; check sailing times at the kiosks in the morning and book your slot then). Red Boat ice cream on the pier afterwards is compulsory.

Late Afternoon: Choose Your Ending

Option A — Penmon: drive out to Penmon Point for the lighthouse and priory, with the light improving all evening. Option B — the Green: stay put, walk the promenade, and watch Snowdonia change colour across the strait. Either way, finish with dinner booked ahead — Bishopsgate House or the Bull — because the good rooms fill. Car-free? The whole plan works via the Bangor bus, minus the Penmon drive.

Variations

No boat? (winter, or rough weather): substitute the drive to Penmon Point and the priory — the lighthouse hour replaces the island hour handsomely. With small children: swap the second castle hour for crab lines and the Green — see the family guide. Anniversary mode: Château Rhianfa for lunch instead of the pub, and the evening walk on the quieter Menai Bridge direction. The overachiever: castle at 9.30, boat at 12, Penmon at 3, Conwy for dinner — possible, verified, not recommended twice.
