Castles & Towns

Caernarfon (30 minutes) completes the World Heritage set with the mightiest of Edward I’s castles and a walled town to match. Conwy (35–40 minutes) offers the most complete medieval town walls in Britain, the castle, the quay and the smallest house in Britain. Llandudno (40 minutes) is the great Victorian resort — pier, promenade and the Great Orme tramway. Bangor (20 minutes) adds a cathedral, Garth Pier and the shops.

Anglesey’s Own

Stay on the island: Penmon Point and Red Wharf Bay are covered in their own guides. Beyond them, Newborough Warren and beach (35 minutes) pairs forest red squirrels with one of Britain’s finest beaches and the tidal island of Llanddwyn; South Stack near Holyhead (50 minutes) stacks a lighthouse, 400-foot cliffs and an RSPB seabird city; and the famously long-named Llanfairpwllgwyngyll... station (15 minutes) is the quick photo stop en route to anywhere.

And the Mountains

Snowdonia gets its own guide — Llanberis, Snowdon and Betws-y-Coed all inside the hour. The honest advice: base in Beaumaris, raid the mainland, and be back on the pier for the evening light. Public transport options for all of these are in Without a Car.

Planning the Raids

Sequencing advice from experience: pair Caernarfon with Newborough (same side of the island and strait), Conwy with Llandudno (ten minutes apart), and Llanberis with the Ogwen Valley for a mountain day. Keep Beaumaris evenings sacred — being back for the golden hour on the Green is the whole point of basing here. Castle economics: if you’re doing three or more Cadw sites in a week (Beaumaris, Caernarfon, Conwy, Harlech), a Cadw membership or explorer pass usually pays for itself — check current options at cadw.gov.wales before buying singles.
