Riding on the Strait

The Anglesey Riding Centre at Tal Y Foel sits right on the Menai Strait with spectacular views across to Snowdonia. Rides run for one or two hours along the shore, around country lanes and on the centre’s own grass tracks, with shorter lead-rein rides for young children. Outside the summer season, half-day and full-day rides cater to more experienced riders.

Lessons & Horse Care

Qualified instructors give individual or group lessons in flatwork and jumping for all abilities, and there is a cross-country training course. Horses and ponies are reliable and suit riders of all sizes and standards. Through the summer the centre runs young people’s days and half-days — catch, groom and care for your pony as well as ride. The centre also breeds horses, with home-bred young stock to see.

The centre adjoins Tal Y Foel Farm Guesthouse, which offers individually designed riding holidays. From Beaumaris allow about half an hour’s drive around the strait — comfortably combined with a south-Anglesey day taking in Newborough’s forest and beach.

Practical Notes

Book ahead in school holidays — the shore rides at low tide, with Caernarfon Castle across the water and Snowdonia behind it, are the centre’s signature and fill first. Wear long trousers and shoes with a small heel; hats are provided. Complete beginners are genuinely welcome (the whole point of a riding centre on grass tracks and quiet lanes), while experienced visitors should ask about the out-of-season full-day rides — some of the best distance riding in North Wales. Combine with lunch in Dwyran or a Newborough beach afternoon to make the south-island day complete.
